BIRDS has a very humble beginning in terms of its area of operation, working in one of the most backward mandals of Kurnool district viz., Midthur. Activities of BIRDS were limited to this mandal. In 1996, BIRDS started expanding to other backward mandals within the Kurnool district. By the year 2003, BIRDS covered six mandals in the district, viz., Midthur, Kolimigundla, Owk, Rudravaram, Chagalamarri and Allagadda.

BIRDS entered other districts, after becoming the Nodal NGO of APFAMGS Project, during the reporting year. It extended its area of operation through partner NGOs to seven districts of Andhra Pradesh viz., Anantapur, Chittoor, Cuddapah, Kurnool, Mahbubnagar, Nalgonda and Prakasam.

Through CHETANA Network, BIRDS is presently working in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Tamilnadu, Karnataka, Orissa, and Chattisgarh.
